What are stem cells?
Stem cells are cells that can divide to produce many types of cell. There are two kinds of stem cells.
1 of 14
What are Embryonic stem cells?
Embryonic stem cells are taken from embryos that contain only a few cells.
2 of 14
What are adult stem cells?
Adult stem cells are found in differentiated tissue, such as bone or skin - they divide to replace damaged cells.
3 of 14
How do embryonic stem cells change as an animal matures?
Embryonic stem cells can differentiate into almost any type of cell. As the animal matures, most cells lose this ability. Only a few adult stem cells remain that can differentiate into a small range of different types of cell.
4 of 14
What is an advantage of embryonic stem cells? (1)
They are easy to extract from embryo.
5 of 14
What is an advantage of embryonic stem cells? (2)
They produce any type of cell.
6 of 14
What is a disadvantage of embryonic stem cells? (1)
Embryo is destroyed which cells are removed - some people think embryos have a right to life.
7 of 14
What is a disadvantage of embryonic stem cells? (2)
The body recognises the cells as 'different' and will reject them without use of drugs.
8 of 14
What is an advantage of all stem cells?
They can replace faulty cells with healthy cells, so a person can get well again.
9 of 14
What is a disadvantage of all stem cells?
They may produce cancer cells instead of healthy cells.
10 of 14
What is an advantage of adult stem cells? (1)
No embryos are destroyed so not an ethical issue.
11 of 14
What is an advantage of adult stem cells? (2)
If taken from the person to be treated, it will not cause rejection by the body.
12 of 14
What is a disadvantage of adult stem cells? (1)
They are difficult to find and extract from tissue.
13 of 14
What is a disadvantage of adult stem cells? (2)
They produce only a few types of cell.
