What are stem cells?
Cells that can differentiate and divide along different pathways
1 of 12
True/false: Embryos are not initially made of stem cells
False- they are made of stem cells
2 of 12
Name three places in an adult where stem cells are found
Bone marrow, liver and skin
3 of 12
How are adult stem cells helpful?
The ability to regenerate and repair damaged tissues
4 of 12
What is a negative in using adult stem cells?
Cannot differentiate in as many different ways as embryonic stem cells
5 of 12
Name three tissues that lack stem cell activity
Brain, kidneys, heart
6 of 12
How does Stargardt's disease occur?
In children between 6 and 12 when there is a recessive mutation of a gene ABCA4 causes membrane protein for active transport in retinal cells to malfunction
7 of 12
There has been one test on humans to treat Stargardt's disease. Explain
50,000 retinal cells were derived from stem cells and injected into a woman's eyes. The cells attached to the retina and stayed there during the four month trial with no side effects.

What is Leukemia?
A type of cancer where abnormally large numbers of white blood cells are produced
9 of 12
How is leukemia treated by adult stem cells?
Large needle inserted into a large bone, usually pelvis and fluid containing stem cells produced. Stem cells are extracted and frozen. Chemotherapy given to patient which destroys cancer cells so marrow loses its ability to produce blood cells.
10 of 12
What happens after a leukemia patient is given chemotherapy?
Stem cells inserted and re-establish themselves in bone marrow. They start producing red and white blood cells normally
11 of 12
What are the issues with using stem cells to treat leukemia?
Infections; graft-versus-host disease
