What are stem cells?
They are undifferentiated cells which can divide to produce lots more undifferentiated cells. They can differentiate into different types of cells depending on what instructions they are given.
1 of 12
Where are stem cells found?
They are found in early human embryos and in certain places in adults like bone marrow.
2 of 12
What can Embryonic stem cells turn into?
ANY type of cell
3 of 12
What can adult stem cells turn into?
Only certain ones like blood cells.
4 of 12
How could medicine use adult stem cells to cure disease?
Stem cells transferred from bone marrow of a healthy person can replace faulty blood cells.
5 of 12
How can embryonic stem cells help the sick?
Replace faulty cells; e.g Insulin producing cells for diabetics or nerve cells for people paralysed by spinal injuries.
6 of 12
What is therapeutic cloning?
Its when an embryo is made to have the same genetic information as the patient. This means the stem cells produced would contain the same genes and wouldn't be rejected by the body.
7 of 12
What are risks of using stem cells in medicine?
e.g Stem cells grown in the lab could get contaminated with a virus passing it on to the patient.
8 of 12
Give points against stem cell research
Human embryos shouldn't be used because they are potential human lives. Scientists should be concentrating more on finding and developing other sources of stem cells, so people could be helped without using embryos.
9 of 12
Give points for stem cell research
Curing patients who already exist and are suffering is more important than the rights of embryos. Also the embryos are usually unwanted ones.
10 of 12
where are stem cells found in plants?
In the meristems where the cells can differentiate into any type of plant cell.
11 of 12
How can stem cells be used with plants?
Can be used to produce clones of plants and grow more rare plants.
