What is malaria caused by?
It is caused by a protozoan called Plasmodium which feed on human red blood cells.

What is Plasmodium carried by?
It is carried by mosquitoes, which are vectors. They are not affected by the disease but transmit it to humans through their bite.

How can we stop the spread of malaria?
By draining stagnant water, putting oil on the surface of the water and spraying it with insecticides.

What causes illnesses?
Bacteria and viruses which are pathogens and both micro-organisms.

How does bacteria and viruses affected the body?
Bacteria multiply quickly and release harmful toxins. Viruses are smaller so get into the cells and multiply. They burst the cell and get into the blood stream.

What stops you from getting ill?
White blood cells. There two types: lymphocytes and phagocytes.

What are lymphocytes and phagocytes?
Lymphocytes multiply quickly and produce antibodies which fit onto the antigens on the surface of the pathogen. Phagocytes engulf the pathogens.

What is passive immunity?
This is when you receive antibodies rather than your body making it. Also it works quickly but it is short term.

What is active immunity?
This is when you make your own antibodies that fight off the pathogen. The white blood cells remember the pathogen that infected you. So the next time same pathogen infects you, your body can produce antibodies quickly. This is slower but long term.

What is a placebo?
A harmless pill.

What is a blind trial?
When the patient doesn't know what they are being given.

What is a double blind trial?
When both the patient and doctor don't know what they are being given and what they are giving.
