When planning an investigation what do you start with?

What is a hypothesis?
A hypothesis is a statement that you think is true but you haven't go evidence to support yet. A hypothesis must be testable.

Data that you have collected yourself

a survery (in form of a questionnaire, an interview or observation) or an experiment

What are some pros of primary data?
1. The data you gather is directly related to and tests you hypothesis 2. You have complete control over your method of collection

What is a disadvantage of primary data?
Costs a lot of time and money - may not be very convenient

What is secondary data?
Data someone else has collected

Where can you get secondary data from?
newspapers, magazines, the internet, databases and historical records

Where can you get secondary data from the government?
Through the Office for National Statistics (ONS)

What are some pros of secondary data?
1. Easier to get hold of. 2.May be free of charge. 3.A lot of the work has already been done - making the investigation quicker.4. You can use bigger data sets than you could collect on your own

What are some cons of secondary data?
1. It is often processed (not in the format you want).2. may not represent the thing you want to research exactly (e.g. might be out of date or wrong geographical region) 3. It is hard to know how accurate the data is. 4. Bias
