Statistics
Using information to answer questions. This information is observed, collected, ordered, represented and analysed.
1 of 26
Hypothesis
An assumption that is the starting point of an investigation. It may or may not be true.
2 of 26
Quantitative variables
Numerical observations or measurements.
3 of 26
Qualitative variables
Non-numerical observations.
4 of 26
Continuous data
Can be any value from a continuous numerical scale.
5 of 26
Discontinuous data
Can only be particular values from a continuous numerical scale.
6 of 26
Ranked data
Values that can be put in order. This data can be counted and ordered but not measured.
7 of 26
Categorical
Set of data values that can be sorted into categories.
8 of 26
Data accuracy
Any measurement that is accurate to +-1/2 unit.
9 of 26
Bivariate data
Pairs of related values.
10 of 26
Population
Everything and everyone involved in an investigation.
11 of 26
Census
Data containing information about every member of the population.
12 of 26
Sample
Information about a part of the population.
13 of 26
Sampling units
Are the people or items that are to be sampled.
14 of 26
Sampling frame
The list of the people or items that are to be sampled.
15 of 26
Random sample
Chosen without a conscious decision about which items from the population will be selected.
16 of 26
Cluster sample
Used when a population naturally divides itself into clusters and samples are taken from each cluster.
17 of 26
Quota sampling
Instructions are given about the quota to be sampled from each section of the population.
18 of 26
Systematic sampling
Choose a starting point on a sampling frame and select items at regular intervals.
19 of 26
Primary data
Data collected by the person using it.
20 of 26
Secondary data
Data collected by someone else.
21 of 26
Survey
Selection of data from a given population to analyse a certain issue.
22 of 26
Pilot survey
A collection of data from a small sample used to test design and methods.
23 of 26
