what are the characteristics of glycogen?
1. short chains. 2. found in animals. 3. readily hydrolysed to alpha-glucose. 4. found mainly in muscles and liver
1 of 5
what are the characteristics of starch?
1. found in plants. 2. made of alpha-glucose chains by glycosidic bonds. 3. wound into tight coils to be compact
2 of 5
what are the characteristics of cellulose?
1. unbranched chains. 2. hydrogen bonds form cross linkages. 3. due to sheer number of bonds, cellulose is very strong. 4. grouped to from microfibrils. 5. found in cell wall of plants
3 of 5
how is starch suited to be an energy source?
1. it is insoluble so its not affected by water potential and osmosis. 2. doesnt diffuse out of cells. 3. compact so a lot can be stored. 4. when hydrolysed it forms alpha-glucose
4 of 5
what is the difference between starch and cellulose?
cellulose is made of beta-glucose, starch made up of alpha-glucose
