Why do we need standards?

System developed against efined standard more likely to be successful and satisfy users and ensures different systems can talk to each other.

A standard which is publically available

Examples and properties of open standards?

Updated by a group of developers who make regular updates available to anyone, usually high quality but no-one to blame if goes wrong, e.g HTML, C#, TCP/IP programming languages and Linux and Mozilla Software.
