Stalin was in charge of the Bolshevik newspaper. This meant he could control what was being read and push his own ideas as official policy.

Stalin spent the early part of the revolution mending his printing presses then communicated progress of rebels to Lenin. Although he supported the revolution, he was not a leading figure.

1917 - 1923 Commissar for Nationalities
Stalin took responsibility for all minorities in USSR. It enabled Stalin to build up a network of alliances across a wide range of places.

1919 -1923 Head of workers and peasants Inspectorate
Stalin was able to meet working class members of the Bolshevik party. This meant Stalin was in control of sections of the party tat dealt with industry and agriculture.

1922 onwards, General Secretary of the party
This gave Stalin control of information on members and enabled him to decide what topics should be discussed. Knowledge is power.

Stalin was one of the small group of leading Communists who met regularly to make policy. They were effectively the decision makers for the USSR.
