Stages of Mitosis

?
Interphase
- cell carries out usual functions
- DNA replicates
- cells prepare to divide
1 of 6
Prophase
- chromosomes condense and become visible as a pair of sister chromatids
- nuclear membrane breaks down
- spindle fibres begin to form
2 of 6
Metaphase
- chromosomes align at the equator of the cell
- each chromosome is attached to a spindle fibre by the centromere
3 of 6
Anaphase
- spindle fibres contract
- centromeres split
- chromatids are pulled to opposite poles of the cell ~ centromere first
4 of 6
Telophase
- nuclear membranes reform around the groups pf chromosomes
- chromosomes begin to uncoil
- spindle fibres break down
5 of 6
Cytokinesis
- chromosomes not visible now
- cytoplasm and organelles divided into two daughter cells
- each cell is now in interphase again
