What was the study in 1960?
They observed 60 infants, working class homes in Glasgow, for 12 months, Mothers were visited every 4 weeks - resported to infant responder, after being left alone or with other people, looked at interactions between baby and caregiver.

Were there any problems with the study?
Mothers could change the findings so they look like good mothers.

What did this study lead to?
It led to the theory of attatchment being put forward, of the four stages of attatchment.

What was stage 1?
Indiscriminate behaviour, upto 2 months old, baby is not predisposed to a particular carer/ thing - baby responds equally to all caregivers.

What was stage 2?
The beginnings of an attatchment, after 4 months, distinguish promary and secondary caregivers, NOT yet stranger anxiety, genrally sociable and happy to be with others, no seperation anxiety.

What was stage 3?
Discriminate attatchment, particular people, scared when seperated from mother, stranger/ seperation anxiety, quality not quantity.

What was stage 4?
Multipe attatchments, baby becomes increasingly independent, and forms several attatchments. 78% 6mths after, 29% multiple attatchements 1mth later.
