Stable Earth

?
What does a seismograph show?
The different types of seismic wave.
1 of 13
What do L waves do?
They travel round the surface very slowly.
2 of 13
What are P waves?
P waves are longitudinal pressure waves.
3 of 13
What are the properties of P waves?
They can travel through solids and liquids and travel faster than S waves.
4 of 13
What are S waves?
S waves are transverse waves.
5 of 13
What are the properties of S waves?
The can only travel through solids and travel slower than P waves.
6 of 13
How do P waves travel through the Earth and how is this usefuld?
P waves are refracted by the core and scientists can use them to work out the size of the Earth's core.
7 of 13
How do S waves travel through the Earth and how is this useful?
S waves cannot be detected on the opposite side of the Earth from where the earthquake starts, because they cannot travel through the core. This tells scientists that the Earth's core is liquid.
8 of 13
What causes a tan?
The action of UV radiation on the skin.
9 of 13
How is a tan produced?
Cells in the skin produce melanin, a pigment which produces tan.
10 of 13
Why do people with dark skin not tan so easily?
Because UV radiation is filtered out.
11 of 13
How is maximum time to spend in the sun calculated?
Max sun time = published normal burn time x SPF
12 of 13
Why is the ozone layer thinnest in the south pole?
Because ozone depleting chemicals work best in cold conditions.
