Stable and unstable nuclei

?
Strong Nuclear Force
Helps to keep the nucleus stable. An attractive force up to 3fm. A repulsive force within 0.5fm.
1 of 5
Nuclear Decay
Unstable nuclei emits particles to become more stable.
2 of 5
Alpha Decay
Nucleus is too big to be kept stable by the strong nuclear force. Alpha particles emitted from nucleus.
3 of 5
Beta-minus Decay
Occurs in neutron-rich isotopes. When nucleus ejects beta particles, neutrons change to protons. Anti-neutrino released carries some energy and momentum.
4 of 5
Extra Info
Observations showed energy of particles after beta particles, less than before. Wolfgang Pauli suggested that another particle emitted, accounting for the missing energy, called the neutrino.
