Sport Unit 1

?
Explain how the bones of the skeleton are used to help protect the body.
Some bones protect our vital organs. For example, cranium/brain; sternum/heart; ribs/lungs.
1 of 16
What is Kyphosis and what causes it?
The excessive outward curve of the spine (thorax region). Hunchback appearance. Caused by poor posture or deformities of vertebrae.
2 of 16
Give an example of a flat bone and state the main function of flat bones.
Sternum/scapula/pelvis/cranium. Protection/attachment for muscles.
3 of 16
Give examples of the key features of synovial joints.
Synovial Fluid, Synovial Membrane, Joint Cavity, Bursa, Joint Capsule, Cartilage, Ligaments, Meniscus & Pads of Fat.
4 of 16
What does the Synovial Fluid do?
Reduces friction/allows free movement.
5 of 16
What does the Synovial Membrane do?
Produces synovial fluid.
6 of 16
What does the Joint Cavity do?
Allows movement.
7 of 16
What does the Bursa do?
Provides cushion and prevents friction.
8 of 16
What does the Joint Capsule do?
Surround and protect the joint.
9 of 16
What does the Cartilage do?
Protect bone/act as a shock absorber.
10 of 16
What does the Ligaments do?
Join bone to bone.
11 of 16
What does the Meniscus do?
Prevent wear and tear and shock absorb.
12 of 16
What does the Pads of Fat do?
Provides cushioning.
13 of 16
What type of joint is located at the elbow and what bones articulate there?
Hinge joint. Radius/Ulna/Humerus.
14 of 16
What is Arthritis and what causes it?
Inflammation at a joint, causes pain. Most common type is osteoarthritis, caused by general wear and tear over time.
15 of 16
How can participating in regular exercise help prevent Arthritis?
Regular exercise produces more synovial fluid. This lubricates joints more reducing friction.
