What was the procedure for this study?
Spitz observed children in institutions to see how they coped with deprivation of their caregiver.

What were the results for this study?
Over a 3 month period children became more depressed, after 3 months of deprivation depression was more severe, childern would lose weight, get insomnia, have a lower IQ and some died.

Separation from a caregiver has severe consequences and lack of stimulation in institutions is also to blame for their decline into depression.

What were the strengths of this study? (2)
Real children in real life institutions were used so the data is ecologically valid. The study was longitudinal so data is in depth and later results supported the original findings.

What were the weaknesses of this study? (2)
There were no contorls or sampling so results may have been caused by factors other than deprivation. IQ test are unreliable measures of intelligence.
