what is a spirometer?
a chamber filled with (medically graded) oxygen that sits on top of a tank of water, it has a tube attached to it with a mouth piece, it measures lung volumes.
1 of 10
what can you not find using a spirometer?
the residual volume or the total lung capacity.
2 of 10
how does a spirometer work?
as the person breathes in and out the chamber moves down then up as oxygen is taken in and replaced with exhaled CO2 which is then absorbed by the soda lime
3 of 10
is total CO2 breathed out = total O2 breathed in?
yes
4 of 10
what is the oxygen consumption?
the decrease in the volume of gas in the spirometer chamber -
5 of 10
how can it be taken?
the average slope of the trace
6 of 10
why is soda lime used?
if someone breathes in and out of the spirometer for a period of time the level of CO2 will increase dangerously, the soda lime absorbs it
7 of 10
how do you calculate the oxygen uptake per minute?
take the first exhalation value away from the final exhalation value in dm3 and then divide this by the number of seconds the trace is, times that answer by 60 and thats the O2/min. give ans in dm3 min-1
8 of 10
how do you measure the breaths per minute?
count how many pairs of inhalations and exhalations there are in the time period of the spirometer trace and then divide or multiply up or down to obtain how many breaths/min
9 of 10
how would the tidal volume of an athlete differ from that of an untrained individual?
the athlete would have a larger tidal volume and more breaths per minute
