Tidal Volume (TV)
The volume of air in each breath. Normally around 0.4dm3

The maximum volume of air that can be breathed in or out usually per minute

Rate at which a person uses up oxygen- number of dm3 per minute

Spirometer
It is an oxygen-filled chamber with a movable lid. A person breathes through the tube connected to the oxygen chamber, the lid then moves up or down which has a pen attached to it. This will then causes a spirometer trace

Soda Lime
It is in the tube that the subject breathes into, it absorbs the carbon dioxide. This ensures that there is only oxygen in the chamber.

How do you get a valid reading?
Person using it has to wear a nose piece to ensure that they can only breathe in and out of their mouth.
