Aim
To investigate the effects of disconnection of hemispheres on perception and memory.
1 of 11
Research method
Natural experiment, 11 patients had their left and right hemispheres disconnected and were tested in a lab using apparatus that could display stimuli independently to the left and right visual field.
2 of 11
What were the participants required to do during the research method?
They were required to say, write or find what they had seen.
3 of 11
Describe what Other tests had done
Other tests used objects placed simultaneously or separately in each hand, which participants had to find or name.
4 of 11
What else was conducted?
Manual tests, such as copying hand positions.
5 of 11
Results
In split brain patients, each hemisphere can perceive and remember info presented only to that hemisphere.
6 of 11
Results: verbal responses
Verbal responses were only possible when info was presented to left hemisphere (eg through right hemisphere or right hand)
7 of 11
Conclusion
Hemisphere disconnection causes the two to operate independently, each having its own conciousness, including perception and memory
8 of 11
Sampling
Opportunity sampling- 11 ps with epilepsy
9 of 11
Why was the participants brains separated down the corpus callosum (middle)?
To reduce the spread of epileptic seizures from one side to the other.
10 of 11
What type of data was collected?
Qualitative data- asked to say or write down the name of objects presented to the RVF, ps could not do so. They would report having seen a flash of light. They behaved as though they were blind ie. didnt believe that there had been a stimulus at all
