Spermatogenesis
Occurs within seminiferous tubules of the testes. Inside the walls of these tubules are precursor stem cells (Spermatogonium: Diploid -> Give rise to future sperm cells)

Leydig cells
Found on interstitrum; release testosterone which stimulates the stem cell to differentiate into the diploid primary spermatocyte.

General process
Spermatogonium -> Primary Spermatocyte -> Secondary Spermatocyte -> Spermatids -> Sperm Cells

Sertoli Cells
Provide nutrients to the growing sperm cells and help remove unwanted cytoplasm.

Final Stage
Once sperm cells are produced in the seminiferous tubules they move into a region of highly convoluted tubules called the epididymus, where sperm cells mature and are stored until release.

Oogenesis
Process by which female gametes are produced in the ovaries. Unlike in males, all the primary oocytes are produced during foetal development.

Oogonium
Precursor stem cells. During foetal development, they differentiate into primary oocytes.

Development of primary oocyte
During puberty the cycle begins where one primary oocyte undergoes meiosis I to produce the secondary oocyte which remains frozen in metaphase II. During fertilisation the secondary oocyte finishes meiosis II to produce an ovum.
