A man runs after a bus.The bus is travelling at an average speed of 5m/s.The man runs 25m in 6 s.Does he catch the bus?
The man’s average speed is 25 ÷ 6 = 4.2 m/s.So he will not catch a bus moving at 5m/s.
1 of 10
What is the formula for average speed?
The formula for average speed is distance moved ÷ time taken. The units are metres per second.
2 of 10
What are the units for mass?
The units for mass are kilograms.
3 of 10
What does a steep line correspond to in a distance-time graph?
The vertical axis in a distance-time graph is the distance travelled from the start.
4 of 10
How is velocity different from speed?
Velocity is speed in a given direction.
5 of 10
What is the formula for acceleration?
Change in velocity ÷ time taken
6 of 10
What is the vertical axis in a speed-time graph?
The vertical axis in a speed-time graph is the velocity of the object.
7 of 10
What does a downwards line correspond to in a speed-time graph?
Constant deceleration.
8 of 10
What does the area beneath a velocity-time graph represent?
The distance travelled.

If a car increases in velocity from +5 m/s to +15 m/s in three seconds, what is its acceleration?
The formula for acceleration is change in velocity ÷ time taken. So 10 m/s divided by 3 s is +3.3 m/s2.
