What hormones does the HYPOTHALAMUS produce? (RH)
Thyrotropin RH, Growth-Hormone RH, Growth-Hormone Inhibiting H, Gonadatropin RH, Corticotropin RH, Oxytocin and ADH
1 of 18
What are the target organs/glands for hypothalamic RH?
ALL anterior pituitary gland apart from oxytocin and ADH (posterior PG)
2 of 18
What do GnRH, CRH, Oxytocin and ADH stimulate?
GnRH: release of LH & FSH. CRH: release of ACTH (cortisol reg.). Oxytocin: stimulates uterus and breasts. ADH: regulates kidney water content.
3 of 18
What hormones are produced by the ANTERIOR PITUITARY gland?
Adrenocorticotropin hormone, Thyroid stimulating hormone, LH, FSH, Prolactin, Growth Hormone, Melanocyte-stimulating H.
4 of 18
Where do the anterior pituitary hormones target?
ACTH: adrenal cortex. TSH: Thyroid gland. LH & FSH: Ovaries. Prolactin: breasts. MSH: Melanocytes
5 of 18
What are the affects of Ant.Pit.Hormones on target cells?
ACTH: Release of adrenaline (fight/flight). TSH: Thyroxine released (metabolism, HR, circulation, digestion). LH&FSH: follicle growth/ovulation. Prolactin: milk production. MSH: release of melanin
6 of 18
What hormones does the Superior Pituitary Gland secrete? What are their target glands?
Oxytocin and ADH. Oxytocin: uterus and mammary glands. ADH: Kidneys!
7 of 18
What are the effects of oxytocin and ADH on their target glands?
Oxytocin: controls contractions in labor, involved in sexual arousal. ADH: High ADH promotes water reabsorption into blood.
8 of 18
What hormone does the thyroid gland produce and what is its effect?
Thyroxine. Goes to liver, kidneys, bones and gastro! Regulates metabolism, heart, digestion, muscle control, brain development, bone maintenance.
9 of 18
What hormone does the parathyroid release and what is its effect?
Parathyroid hormone, works on bones. Stimulates osteoclasts to degrade bone matrix to release calcium when calcium levels are too low.
10 of 18
What hormones does the pancreas secrete and what are their effects?
Glucagon and insulin. Glucagon acts of alpha cells of liver, muscle and adepose to induce glycogenolysis. Insulin acts of beta cells to induce glycogenesis.
11 of 18
What hormones does the adrenal gland produce? What are their effects?
Adrenoline and cortisol. Works on heart, lungs, eyes, muscles, pancreas etc. AD: FIGHT/FLIGHT RESPONSE. Cortisol: metabolism, blood sugar levels, immune response, memory
12 of 18
What hormones does the ovaries produce? What are their effects?
Oestrogen and Progesterone. Oest: works on brain, bones, ovaries, liver, breasts. Progest: ovaries. Progesterone: involved in regulating menstrual cycle.
13 of 18
What are the specific effects of oestrogen?
Stimulates puberty (breast prod.), menstrual cycle (thickening of endo.), bone health, maintains liver production of cortisol, body temp!
14 of 18
What hormone is produced in the testes? What is its effect?
Testosterone...goes to reproductive organs and anything in puberty. Initiates male puberty, provides libido.
15 of 18
What hormone is produced in the kidney? Effects?
Erythraprotein and vit D. Erythraprotein goes to bone marrow, stimulates RBC production which helps O2 maintenance!
16 of 18
What hormone does the stomach produce? Target cells and effects?
Gastrin, goes to parietal cells, produce gastric acids. This allows stomach to break down proteins, stimulates pancreas to release enzymes.
17 of 18
What hormones does the duodenum secrete? Target cells and effect?
Cholecystokinin (CCK) and Secretin. CCK: Gall bladder, contract and release bile into intestine. Secretin: Pancreas, regulates pH of duodenum
