Specialised cells

?
How are sperm cells specialised for reproduction? 3 things.
Has a long tail and streamlined head to help it swim to the egg. Lot of mitochondria in the cell to provide the energy needed. Carries enzymes in its head to digest through egg cell membrane.
1 of 7
How are nerve cells specialised for rapid signalling? 2 things.
They are long to cover more distance. Have branched connections at their ends to connect to other nerve cells.
2 of 7
How are muscle cells specialised for contraction? 2 things.
Long so they have space to contract and contain lots of mitochondria to generate the energy needed for contraction.
3 of 7
How are root hair cells specialised for absorbing water and minerals? 1 thing.
Have hairs that give plant a large surface area for absorbing water and mineral ions from the soil.
4 of 7
How are phloem and xylem cells specialised for transporting substances? 4 things.
Tubes are long, joined end to end. Xylem cells are hollow in the centre and phloem have very few subcellular structures so stuff can flow through them.

Exam Question: Plants transport food substances from the leaves to growing parts of the plant through phloem tubes. Give one feature of a phloem cell that makes it specialised for its function. [1 mark].
Any from: They are long/ joined end to end / Few subcellular structures.

Exam Question: Describe how a root hair cell is adapted for its function. [2 marks].
Has a hair like shape which gives it a large surface area [1 mark] to absorb water and minerals from the soil [1 mark].
