Operating System
The Operating System is a set of programs that control the hardware and lets users and applications work on the computer.

User Interface Software
The user interface is the boundary between the human user and the machine. The interface lets the user give commands, asks questions and displays a response.

Command Line Interface (CLI)
The command line interface requires the user to type a command. After it has the command it will translate it by using a command interpreter which turns it into signals that the computer can understand.

Graphical User Interface (GUI)
The GUI uses images, known as icons, to represent sources, files, programs and actions. The GUI is a useful way to interact with a computer because they are intuitive, no special training is required to use them and no commands need to be learned.

Touch Screens
Touch screens are designed for phones or tablets which means they are not designed for mouse input but are designed for actions of the fingers such as pinch, drag or tap.

Natural Language and Speech
Natural language and speech interfaces accept normal speech as input. This is difficult though because of factors such as: accent, speed of talking, dialect used and clarity of diction.

Memory Management
When an Operating System has to decide what goes where in memory they have to make sure that, memory is used efficiently and important data is not overwritten during the running of a program.

Virtual Memory
Virtual memory (Not real memory) uses secondary storage to hold parts of a program that are not currently needed. It is slower to access than the main memory.

Peripheral Mangagement
When you save a file, the OS looks up where there is free space on the medium. It then writes the data to the medium and takes a record of where it is located. Then the next time you need the file the OS looks up its location, finds it and retrieves
