Sub-Culture
Group of people who share the same values, beliefs, behaviours and language within a bigger culture. E.g. Goths.

Mass/ Low Culture
Mass culture is of extrinsic value. It is built on idea that it has a passive audience, the audience is munipulated by media.

High Culture
Seen as elitest. A high culture leisure activity would be going to the ballet.

Folk Culture
Pre-industrialised culture. Based on supportive communities and a strong sense of family. E.g. story telling.

Global Culture
Technological change lead to globalisation, changing of cultural diversity, to cultural homogeneity.

Popular Culture
Active Audience, audience shapes the media.

Symbolic Consumption
Buying things which define who you are. E.g. Nike trainers.

Norms
Unwritten rules of society. We learn them throughout our lives through observation and reaction of others.

Mores
Stronger type of norm. Something considered as 'the right thing to do.'

Hidden Curriculum
Behaviour and attitudes you learn at school. Without them being on the formal curriculum. -> formal social control.

Sanction
A consequence of something.

Feeling of absolute depression. Isolation.

Cultural Imperialism.
When a culture becomes global and starts to influence and blanket other cultures. e.g. macdonaldisation

Status Frustration
Feel like you can't achieve status in society, so achieve status in peer group.
