Althusser
Two elements in education, the repressive state apparatus helps maintain rule by force. The ideological state apparatus helps controls values and beliefs.

The role of education is to produce obedient workers that will accept inequality as the 'norm'. Schools reward submissive behaviour such as being obedient, and punctuality. However, they won't reward independence.

Davis and Moore
They see education as allocating pupils to the jobs they are best suited to. They argue that inequality is needed so that we are able to give the best people the best jobs. Education 'shifts and sorts'.
