What did Bott (1957) conclude?
Two predominant types of conjugal role of relationships: Segregated conjugal roles and joint conjugal roles. Joint roles most likely in M/C and young couples. Close-knit social networks = segregated roles loose-knit = joint conjugal.

Define Segregated roles.
Where there is a clear division of labour in male and female tasks; separate interests and activities; diff. friends and leisure pursuits.

Many activities are carried out together;much leisure time spent together; same friends

What did Willmott and Young (1975) conclude?
Used Bott's theory of conjugal roles in their explanation of the symmetrical family, which they saw to be the typical fam of today. Symmetrical fam = three main characteristics: 1)Nuclear in structure 2) Home-centred 3)Joint conjugal roles.

Oakley criticises them for assuming that answering 'yes' to one question about doing at least one chore per week was a sign of equality.

Oakley (1975) Study: 40 married women between 20-30. Findings: -Greater equality in M/C but in both M/C and W/C little pps by husband - more male pps in childcare than hs/wk(Only 15% - high pps hs/wk 25% =high in childcare).

Boulton (1983) Study: 50 young married mothers Findings: Men helped but never took primary responsibilty(18%=husbands gave extensive help 46% =minimal) Ferri and smith (1996) Similar results with much larger sample.

Duncombe and Marsden (1995) = The triple shift - Most of the hs/wk + Paid employment + Most of the emotion work. Stufy: 40 couples married for 15 years.

Edgell (1980) - Husbands dominated areas of decision making - moving house, finance etc Both seen as important by both. Wives dominated decision making on internal decorations, not seen as very important by both

Suggests approach is flawed -suggests women may use their social and manipulative skills to undermine men's power.

Pahl (1993) Study: Interviews with 102 couples with children-seen both together and alone. Described 4 different types of bank account: Husband-controlled pooling -Wife-controlled pooling -Husband-control -wife-control --> in that order

Martin and Roberts (1984) Study: Survey of 6000 women aged 16 to 59 Findings: Men more likely to be involved in hs/wk and childcare if wife worked full time. But 54%-full time 77%-part time women workers did all or most of hs/wk.

-Been movement towards equality in past 30 years but that women are a long way from real equality - still take prime responsibility for household tasks-still have less power- Changes =limited

What did Weeks (1999) state about same-sex couples?
Found lesbian couples thought it was easier to have a more equal relationship - often worked to achieve this aim.
