A group of people who are related by blood, marriage, or live in the same household.

Family Ideology
The idea of how a 'proper' family should be like.

Nuclear Family
It's known as the 'traditional' family, and only consists of two parents and children.

Extended Family
When a nuclear family is living with grandparents, and other family members.

Horizontal Extended Family
Two generations living together, e.g: the nuclear family, joined by aunties, uncles, cousins.

Vertical Extended Family
Three generations living together, e.g: grandparents, aunties, uncles, and cousins.

Empty Nest
When a married couple has children, and then the children grow up and move out of the household.

Cohabitation
People who are not married or related live together.

Reconstituted Family
Where one or both partners were previously married or partnered, with children from previous marriages or partnerships.

Single Parent Family
When one parent (either a man or a woman) are responsible for their children, as the other parent is no longer in the picture.

Symmetrical Family
When everyone in the family, including children, share domestic tasks within the household.

Polygamy
When a person is married to more than one person at the same time.

Monogamy
When two people are married.

Divorce
A legal separation of a couple.

Patriarchal
When the husband in the household is the dominant one in the family.

Matriarchal
When the wife in the household is the dominant one in the family.

Conjugal Roles
Expected domestic roles of the husband and wife in a marriage, e.g: men are breadwinners and the women are housewives.

Segregated Conjugal Roles
When men and women have separate domestic roles in the household.

Joint Conjugal Roles
When the men and women can take on both expressive and instrumental, e.g: the man can look after children, and the woman can work.

Civil Partnership
When people of the same gender are married.
