Post-modernists believe society has split into its own beliefs and ideas.

What is meant by "science"?
A set of principles that tel us how to produce valid knowledge. It aims to base laws and theories on objective facts gained through observing phenomena.

What is meant by objectivity?
where research does not involve opinions bias or prejudice

What is meant by empirialism ?
Something is scientific when it uses empirialism (knowledge gained from actually experiencing and / or observing something)

What does Compte say?
"It's possible to discover the laws that control and shape the behaviour of people in society"

What is the deductive method?
Starts with theory. Theory is bombarded with challenges to the hypothesis in order to see if it stands up to its claim. Karl Popper falsification (test something it if it cant be proven false it must be true)

What is the inductive method?
Starts with theory. Finds loads of evidence to prove itself right

Why is sociology not a science?
People like Weber say sociology should study society from the perspective of others.

What did Fayerabend say?
There are many flows in science. A lot of breakthroughs were discovered by chance.

What did Thomas Kuhn say?
Paradigms and scientific revolutions. Pre-scientific ideas, you then get to the "normal" ideas.

What are the key features of modernity?
1. The nation state - a bounded territory controlled by a centralised gov. 2. Capitalism - most modern societies have a capitalist bases 3. science and technology - science dominates as secularisation over 4. individualisation- traditions not import
