What is a family?
Hard to define, could be considered as a type of household where the people living together are related.

What is a household?
A group of people who live together and share things such as meals, bills or chores (can be one person living alone though).

What is fictive kin?
Term used as part of the personal life perspective of the family. They state that we must understand the individual meanings people give to the family. This means there is no one acceptable form. Means that close friends can be classed as relatives.

What is cohabitation?
Living as a partnership without marriage.

What is monogamy?
A relationship in which individuals have more than one partner.

What is serial monogamy?
A relationship in which individuals have one partner at a time but have had other relationships before e.g. when someone gets married then divorced then remarries.

What is polygamy?
A relationship where an individual have more than one partner.

What is polygyny?
One man marries several women.

What is polyandry?
System of marriage involving two or more husbands.

What is extended family?
A group of kin (close family) extended beyond the nuclear family. Can be extended vertically (grandparents) or horizontally (aunts and uncles).

What is a modified extended family?
A newer type of extended family when individuals keep in contact with their extended family by using improved communications methods.

What is a beanpole family?
Extended vertically but not horizontally.

What is a matrifocal family?
A mother raising her children without the father.

What is a reconstituted family?
A stepfamily in which one or both partners have children from previous relationships.

What is an empty shell marriage?
A marriage in name only, where a couple continues to live under the same roof but as separate individuals.
