Ethnocentric Curriculum

The idea that the National Curriculum is based in one particular cultural background and thus puts across a bias view.

A financial scheme applicable to students, those undertaking unpaid work - based learning and aged 16-19 whose parents have a certain level of taxable income. got rid of in 2011 and replaced by a bursary scheme.

Hegemony Values

Ideas and beliefs of the dominant group in society which are filtered down to the masses covertly

Hidden Curriculum

Things that are taught and learnt but are not part of the over program of courses/subjects. E.g. values, beliefs and attitudes which pupils learn as well as the formal curriculum.

Ideological State Apparatus

Neo Marxist, Althusser, uses this to describe state agencies whose prime function is to secure the compliance of subordinates. The biggest one ISA in modern society is the education system.

Key skills

A qualification which is a frequently required component of 14-19 education in England, Northern Ireland and Wales. It aims to encourage learners to show and develop skills as well as learn how to select and apply skills.

Labelling theory

The way agents of social control attach stigmatisation stereotypes to particular groups and the ways in which this changes their behaviour.

A way in which parents can compare schools depending on where they are on the league table due to their amount of exam passes gained by students. First introduced in 1992.
