Material deprivation

poverty and a lack of material necessities such as adequate housing and income, unlike cultural deprivation theorists many sociologists see material deprivation as the main cause of under-achievement.

Poor housing

Can affect pupil's achievement both directly in indirectly. For example, over crowding can have a direct effect by making it harder for the child to study. Overcrowing means less room for educational activities, nowhere to do homework&disturbed sleep

Poor diet&health

Marilyn Howard(2001) notes people from poorer houses have lower intakes of energy, vitamins and minerals. Poor nutrition affects health, for example by weakening the immune system & low energy levels.

Lack of financial support for the costs of education

Means the child miss out on equipment and miss out on experiences that would enhance their education achievements. Children may also have to go out and work.

Less people from working-class go to university because...

They drop out at 16, from already working and they fear debt.
