based on achievement, not ascription; CROMPTON- society has meritocracy; GORARD- class shouldn't affect achievement; there should be strong link between educ. success and social destination

GOLDTHORPE- WC much less likely to move due to different life chances than MC; SCOTT- mobility depends on class (not achievement), as class determines experience of education
