What is sociology?
Sociology is the 'study of society'. A society can be defined as a group of people who share a culture or way of life. Sociology explores the 'social factors' that shape human behavior and the way that society influences our daily lives.

What is common between sociologists, psychologists and biologists?
They all study people and human behavior

What is the difference between the work of a psychologist and a sociologist?
Psychologists focus on an individuals behavior. They study topics like mental illnesses. Sociologists study influences on human life. They focus on group behavior rather than individual behavior.

What is the difference between the work of a biologist and a sociologist?
Biologists look for causes or characteristics when studying human behavior. Sociologists view behavior as social or cultural rather than biological.

What is the difference between the work of a sociologist and a journalist?
Sociologists and journalists sometimes research into similar social issues. However, journalists' research is less thorough and reporting may be biased. Sociologists must select and use evidence in a balanced way or their research may be criticized.

Examiner's tip
