1 of 16
What is normative social influence?
The desire to be liked - conforming to fit in to the majority group because you want to be accepted and don't want to appear foolish.
2 of 16
What is informational social influence?
The desire to be right - conforming to the majority group because we are unsure of the situation causing us to look to others who seem more knowlegable. It is more likely to happen in a fast-thinking situation such as a crisis.

What is internalisation?
Going along with others as you have accepted their point of view because it has been consistent with your own. You accept the group's views in both public and private.

9 of 16
What did the confederates do before the experiment that the participant didn't know about?
They agreed what their answers would be to each question and that they would answer some questions wrong.
10 of 16
How many trials were there and how many trials did they give the incorrect answer?
There were 18 trials and in 12 of them some confederates gave the wrong answer and those 12 were called the critical trials.

12 of 16
What was Asch measuring?
The number of times each participant conformed to the majority view.
13 of 16
What were Asch's findings?
He found that 32% (one third) of the participants in each trial conformed to the obviously wrong majority. He also found that 75% (three quarters) conformed on at least one trial.
14 of 16
What did Asch find out about the size of group variation?
He found that as the size of the majority group increased, so did the level of conformity. Once the majority group reached 3-4, there was little change in conformity.
15 of 16
What did Asch find out about the unanimity variation?
Asch found that where there was a lack of unanimity, there was also a lack of conforming. When just 1 group member didn't conform to the incorrect answer, results of conformity dropped from 32% to 5.5%.
