Functionalism
state serves interest of society as a whole - role is to provide objective, scientific information, investigate social problems and discover causes that will help sociologist provide information to base policies on.

Marxism
Policies provide ideological legitimation to mask exploitation, maintain labour force for further exploitation. Policies give capitalism caring face and provide false class consciousness. role = criticise social policy and reveal exploitation

state perpetuates women's subordination through policies e.g. family policies based on nuclear family being norm. Many policies reflect liberal fem. view that anti-discrimination reforms will bring about gender equality.
