Stratifcation
The way society is organised into layers, with one group above another.

System usually based on occupation and has no restrictions on movement up or down-it is an open system

A position given at birth

Achieved Status
A position gained by individuals throught hard work, talent, educational qualification etc..

Social Mobility
Ability to move up and down a social scale

Life Chances
Chances that sections of society have of achieving success in their society/culture

Meritocracy
Society is believed to be a Meritocracy by some sociologits-success is gained through merit.

Absolute Poverty
Income is so low you cannot afford lifes essentials.

Relative Poverty
When income is below average in comparison to other members of society.

Subjective Poverty
A person who feels deprived may feel they are poor, even if others don not consider them poor

Cycle of Deprivation
A process which may lead the children of poor parents to suffer poverty in adulthood. It includes material deprivation(lack of goods) and cultural deprivation(a lack of culture)

Welfare dependancy
a group of individuals in poverty relying on benefits from the state and choosing not to work-leads to an Underclass

Glass Ceiling
The informal barrier that makes it difficult for women to achieve high level positions at work.

When people are unable or feel unable to play a full part in society(Poverty may be a factor)

Wealth
Includes cash and liquid wealth(e.g paintings, shares in businesses etc)

Bourgeoisie
Own property and make profit from the work of proletariat

Proletariat
Those who work for the Bourgeoisie(the richer, more powerful of the two classes identified by marxists)
