Clues

  • Ethnomethodology - rejects idea of society as real objective structure. Members of society actively construct everyday life. Nothing has fixed meaning-depends on context (indexicality). We can't take meanings for granted but we do - reflexivity. (9)
  • Labelling theory - dramaturgical model - two key concepts are self presentation and impression management. We must control impression our performance gives by studying audience to see their response and then adjusting our performance, skills - facial (7)
  • Labelling theory: the looking glass self - how we develop self concept. During interactions, by taking on role of another we see how others see us. Others act as looking glass - we see ourselves mirrored in how they respond to us (6)
  • Phenomenology - we impose order by constructing mental categories that classify information coming from senses - we share categories with others (typifications). These allow us to organise experiences into shared world of meaning. (6)
  • Structural and action approaches important when understanding human behaviour. 2 levels of explanations: level of cause and level of meaning.Numerous meanings actors give to behaviour: instrumentally rational, value-rational, traditional, affectual. (5)
  • Symbolic interactionism - behaviour is partly predictable. 3 key principles: actions based on meanings given to situations, meanings arise from interaction process and are result of interpretive procedures. (6)
  • Symbolic interactionism - behaviour not shaped by fixed instincts. Respond to situations significant to us through attaching symbols to world. To interpret other's meanings we take on the role of others (looking glass self). no symbols - no interact (4)
