What community variables did Levine look at?
Population size, Economic well-being, Cultural values (Individualism - collectivism, simpatia), Walking speed (pace of life)
2 of 17
What was the IV in this study?
Alerting a pedestrian who dropped a pen. Offering to help a pedestrian with a hurt leg who is trying to reach a pile of dropped magazines. Assisting a blind person to cross the street.
3 of 17
What research method did Levine use?
Field experiment, independent measures design, 23 different countries (cities)
4 of 17
What was the Dependent Variable in this study?
Rate of helping calculated to give each city a helping index
5 of 17
Describe the sample used in Levine's study
Opportunity sample
6 of 17
Who collected the data?
Students who went to their home country, all men, all dressed neatly and casually

At walking pace experimenter walked towards a pedestrian walking alone and dropped a pen. Helping was recorded if the pedestrian alerted the confederate that the pen had been dropped or if the pen was handed over.

Describe the hurt leg condition.
Walking with a heavy limp and wearing a visible leg brace, experimenter struggled to reach a pile of magazines as they came within 20 feet of a passing pedestrian. Helping was defined as offering/beginning to help.
