What is self-report data?
Data collected directly from inidviduals about their opinions using interviews using questionnaires.

What is qualitative data?
Results in words from open questioning where ideas, opinions or narratives are recorded as data.

What are some advantages of qualitative data?
Detailed responses, show emotions more, natural circumstances, more ecologically valid.

What are some disadvantages of qualitative data?
Hard to replicate, lack of controlled methods, lacks replicability.

What is quantitative data?
Results from studies that are numbers, such as the number of words remembered from a memory test.

What are some advantages of quantitative data?
Uses operationalised variables, easy to repeat and check validity, can be tested repeatedly, easily represented, more scientific and objective.

What are some disadvantages of quantitative data?
Can produce narrow data, unrealistic information, focuses on small fragments of behaviour.

What is a pilot study?
A small-scale version of the study to see if any mistakes have been made.

What does 'lack of validity' mean?
Participants can lie in interviews or questionnaires so data isn't always completely valid.

What is social desirability
Where participants give answers they think make themselves look good.

What is meant by demand characteristics?
Where participants give the answers they think reflect the researchers aims.

What does validity mean?
Whether the study measures what it set out to or not.

What is a likert scale?
A scale used in questionnaires that usually measures a participants agreement with a statement, normally ranges from strongly agree to strongly disagree.

What is the independent variable?
The variable that the experimenter manipulates.

What is the dependent variable?
The variable that the experimenter measures, it depends upon the independent variable.
