What is the background of Milgram's research?
"Germans are different" hypothesis. He believe the Nazi Germans obeyed Hitler because Germans are more obedient by disposition.

Quantitative Data from Milgram's study
All 40 participants obeyed until 300v where 5 dropped off. 65% of participants obeyed all the way up to 450v.

Qualitative Data from Milgram's study
showed signs of nervousness e.g.- sweating, trembling, digging fingernails into flesh. Many had nervous laughing fits. 3 people had seizures.

Reasons for high levels of obedience
Took place at Yale university which adds credibility and respect. Most had never taken part in a psychological study so didn't know how to behave. Were told shocks were not dangerous, believed they weren't responsible.

What conclusion did Milgram come to?
No such thing as obedient type. we will all enter and acetic state in the right situation. The Germans are not different, we can all cause possibly fatal harm to another person even when we do not agree with the orders.
