What does social identity theory suggest?
That we put ourselves into groups to feel good and we go through three stages for group formation

What does social categorisation mean?
This is where you see yourself in a group (the in-group)

Where you see yourself as part of the in-group and begin to watch the behaviour of the groups attitudes and appearance

What does social comparison mean?
When you view you social identity as superior and exaggerate your group differences which leads to prejudice

The boys separated themselves into groups and it resulted in violence and comparison which supports the theories ideas

It can help explain why groups become violent and suggests we need to stop group categorisation to stop violence

Realistic conflict theory emphasises the importance of competition contributing to group violence

It ignores individual differences and doesn't explain why some people are more or less prejudice than others
