Normative Social Influence
Conformity as being due to a desire to fit in with the majority group and not stand out. It leads to compliance.

Informational social influence
Happens when a person lacks knowledge of how to behave and so uses the majority group as a source of guidance/ info.

Compliance
Publicly changing behaviour to match the majority group, whilst maintaining a different private view.

Conformity
Individuals change their attitudes, beliefs or behaviours in order to go with the majority group as a result of real or imagined group pressure.

Both publicly and privately chaning behaviour/view to match that of the majority.

Identification
Conforming to the behaviour of a role model group.

Deindividuation
A social process in which people, when placed in a group situation, no longer act as individuals.

Occurs within hierarchies when a person is seen to have a position of power.

Fascist scale
A questionnaire to measure a person's personality towards an authoritive figure.

Authoritarian personality type
Refers to a person who has extreme respect for authority and is more likely to be obedient to those who hold more power over them.

Autonomous state
People direct their own actions and they take responsibility for the results of those actions.

Agentic state
People who allow others to direct their actions, and pass off the responsibility for their consequences to the person the giving orders.

Locus of control
Concerns the extent to which peole percieve themselves as being in control of their own lives.

High internal locus of control
The person believes they can control/affect the outcomes of a situation.

High external locus of control
The person believes things turn out a certain way regardless of our actions.

Conversion theory
Based on the assumption that the minority influence works to convert people (internalise), as opposed to the majority influence (compliance).

Social crypto-amnesia
People have a memory that a change occured but don't remember how it happened.

Snowball effect
Minority influence initally has a relatively small effect but this then spreads more widely as more people consider it.

States that strength, immediacy, and number combined in different ways to result in social influence of any kind.
