Social Influence -Types and Explanations.

?
Internalisation.
Internalisation happens when we genuinely accept group norms resulting in a private and public change that's likely to be permanent even when the group's absent.
1 of 8
Identification.
We conform because there's something about the group we value so want to be part of it, meaning we may publicly change although we privately don't agree with everything about the group.
2 of 8
Compliance.
Simply going along with others in public but privately no change, resulting in a superficial change that stops when group pressure stops.
3 of 8
Explain Deutsch and Gerard's two process theory's ISI.
Informational social influence occurs depending if the group has better info or you. We are unsure if our answers are right or wrong therefore we conform to what the majority believe as we want to be right. This is a cognitive process.

Explain Deutsch and Gerard's two process theory's NSI.
Normative social influence happens when we want to be liked or accepted and is about norms. We want to gain social approval and is an emotional process.
5 of 8
Give a strength for ISI.
Lucas et al. askes students maths problems which they had to answer. Some were easier and other harder. Higher rates of conformity to wrong answers when questions were harder, especially for students who claimed to have poor maths abilities.
6 of 8
Give a limitation for NSI.
Some research shows NSI doesn't affect everyone in the same way and nAffiliators are less concerned with being liked so aren't as affected by NSI, showing the want to be liked underlies conformity for some more than others.
7 of 8
How does NSI and ISI work together?
Deutsch and Gerard say behaviours either due to ISI or NSI however research shows both processes can be involved e.g. conformity's reduced when there's a dissenter, reducing power of NSI or ISI showing its hard to be sure if ISI or NSI is at work.
