Define Internalisation & Give Example
A true change of private and public beliefs to match that of the group they're being influenced by. The beliefs and norms of the group are internalised and become part of their own beliefs. Example: Becoming vegan after living with a group of vegans.

Define Identification & Give Example
Accepting the group norms privately and publicly as they value membership of the group. Shown by social behaviour, but doesn't always impact views/opinions. Example: Taking on Goth culture as a teenager, but changing in the future.

Define Compliance & Give Example
Publicly agreeing with a group, but privately disagreeing. Example: In a class debate, you may agree with the majority but hold a contrary point of view.

Dual-Process Dependency Model - Deutsch & Gerard (1955)
The DPDM is how they explained conformity. It suggests people conform because they depend on others for social approval (normative influence) and for information/need to get things right (informational influence)

Define Normative Influence & Give Example
Is the need to be accepted and to belong. It leads to compliance. They'mm make a decision according to group majority to feel accepted and not feel left out. Shown in Asch's study. Example: Dressing according to current fashion trends to fit in.

Is the need to get things right and gain information. It leads to internalisation. An individual may not know the correct answer/response, so looks at majority opinion, believes it to be correct, and makes a decision according to this. Example: Not k
