Approx 14% of children across the UK qualify for FSM and it’s clear from geographical data, poorer children are less likely to attain. Teach First reported in urban areas 38% of FSM pupils gained A*-C compared to 65% of other pupils. [2014]

Social selection – health determines social position [healthy people are more likely to be promoted e.g. less sick days]. Poor job position means earning less which means dietary habits are poor as can’t afford highly nutritional food. Causes stress.

Bartley and Blane 2008 explain health inequality between classes. Behavioural model = dietary choices are worse and consume more tobacco+alcohol. Materialistic model = live in more hazardous areas and jobs may cause more stress which reduces health.
