What is the first area?
Tenerife, Spain.
1 of 8
What are the environmental issues here?
Water (Tourism is increasing demand for fixed water levels, 2005 resorts leaking raw sewage into sea, exploitation of aquifers), Urbanisation (growth of resorts supplant original villages, SW building materials dredged offshore threaten marine bio).
2 of 8
What are the social issues here?
Community structure (decrease in agriculture as people move to work at resorts, increase in UK tourists are undermining local culture and tradition), Infrastructure (low quality, 2 new Santa Cruz airport further increasing numbers of visitors).
3 of 8
What are the economic issues here?
Employment (employment in tourism has supplanted original agricultural economy = degradation of rural areas due to lack of economically active), Large dependants on tourism (if tourists change destination = 60% loss in GDP, = economic disaster).
4 of 8
What is the second area?
St.Kitts, Western Caribbean.
5 of 8
What are the environmental issues here?
Cruise ships (anchors damage coral, waste left on beaches, oil spills), Some locations only accessible by tracks (scars on landscape, promote forestry), lack of sewage treatment (1 plant, leaks into sea and aquifers) , few water storage facilities.
6 of 8
What are the social issues here?
Inequality (enclave tourism when some find well paid jobs in resort whilst others don't = resentment among local peoples/ social unrest), congestion and overcrowding (cruise ships cause congestion of sensitive beaches).
7 of 8
What are the economic issues here?
Cruise ships (act as floating hotel, limited local benefits, tourists spend $30 each), Reliance on tourism (market is competitive, loss could result in economic collapse), tour operators (hotels owned by MEDC chains, little money reaches locals).
