1 of 9

The Royle Family is often cited as an example of a sitcom known for its realistic portrayal of working-class family life

Newman (working class- negative)

Devereux (working class-negative)
Argues that working class people often fall into two categories within media representations: they are either presented as 'happy' and 'deserving' poor, or negatively with images of those on benefits
4 of 9
Owen Jones (working class-negative)
Argues that the term 'chav' has come to represent a way of condemning working class culture. He sees shows such as Wife Swap and The Jeremy Kyle Show as deliberately presenting working class people in a negative way
5 of 9
Golding and Middleton (underclass- negative)
Examined media-generated moral panics about welfare abuse and argued that the media demonises certain sections of the underclass and that this has contributed towards legitimising welfare cuts by the state
6 of 9
Price (underclass- negative)
Sees shows such as Benefits Street as 'poverty ****' in that they have the intention of exploiting a programme's content in order to have a shocking effect on the audience and to shape their responses
7 of 9
Prince Charles (upper class-negative)
There is evidence of change within media representations of the Royal Family e.g. the media criticism of Prince Charles' lobbying of government ministers and civil servants since 2010

Reiner (upper class-positive)
Contemporary representations of people with wealth show them as examples of success within a meritocratic society. When people are shown as having enormous wealth, their achievements are celebrated
