What is an individualistic culture?
Individualistic cultures behave more independently. Individual rights are seen as being most important. They are less likely to obey. E.g. America or Britain.

What is a collectivistic culture?
Collectivistic cultures do what is best for society as a whole rather than themselves. Interdependence and cooperation are important for the stability of the group. They are more likely to be obedient. E.g. China or India.

Research into culture.
Thomas Blass (1999) conducted a full review of obedience analysing research 35 years after Milgram's first experiments. His data shows that individualistic cultures are less obedient.

What is the aim of Burger's (2009) study?
To investigate obedience by partially replicating Milgram's (1963) study to examine whether situational factors affect obedience to an authoritative figure.

What was the IV and DV of Burger's study?
IV = participants' exposure to a refusing individual. DV = the point at which the participant stopped shocking the learner.

29 males and 41 females, experiment 1 - 2 equal groups, introduced to experimenter and learner, similar script to Milgram, role choice was rigged, Milgram's procedure, 150 volts

What was the procedure of Burger's study (#2)?
Same procedure, 2 confederates instead of 1, 2nd confederate posed as a participant, role choice rigged, teacher 1 took the lead, asked questions and gave shocks, at 75 volts, teacher 1 hesitates after hearing a grunt.

Procedure of Burger's study (#2) continued
90 volts, teacher 1 says "I don't know about this", teacher 1 is prompted by experimenter, but refuses to continue. Teacher 2 is asked to continue.

What was the results of Burger's study?
#1 - 70% of participants had to be stopped before attempting to continue past 150 colts. Milgram has 82.5% at this. #2 - 63.3% went to continue after 150 volts. Little difference between genders.

What was the conclusion of Burger's study?
Time and changes in society's culture did not have an effect on the level of obedience demonstrated by participants, nor did the refusal of the confederate.
