What are smart materials?
Smart materials are materials which change their physical properties in response to an input. eg. making them simpler or safer to use.

The shape memory alloy nitinol can be used for dental braces. Why is this material suitable?
It can be moulded to a particular persons mouth, the body temperature causes it to contract and tighten. Resistant to corrosion from food chemicals in the mouth. Also non-toxic so it is safe in the mouth.

What is the name of the shape memory alloy which is used for flexible glasses or spectacles?
'Memoflex'

How do stent tubes made from nitinol help to repair a blocked or collapsed artery?
The nitinol tube contracts when chilled. It is then inserted into the damaged artery. Once the tubing reaches body temperature it begins to expand again returning to its original shape. Blood can now flow through the veins and arteries again.
