What is SLT explanation of gender?
Is learnt from others. Implies no psychological differences of males + females at birth, but get treated differently - developing their gender

What was the SMITH AND LLOYD study in 1978?
Using 32 mothers, video taped them playing with 6 month old babies with sex-types and sex-neutral toys. Babies perceived to be boys encouraged to play more actively - given hammers. Girls were offered dolls. Showed mothers stereotyping their children

What were the problems with the SMITH AND LLYOD study?
Used independent group design, so differences in play could be down to pps. Measure in terms of first toy played with lacks CONSTRUCT VALIDITY. Also lacks TEMPORAL VALIDITY as sterotyping toys might be different in todays society

What are the 4 conditions of acquiring and performing a behaviour?
ATTENTION - watching someone performing the behaviour, RETENTION - recalling the behaviour, REPRODUCTION - reproducing the behaviour, MOTIVATION - being motivated to do/not do the behaviour - using REWARDS or PUNISHMENTS

What is a role model?
A role model is a person who another person associates with and wants to be like. There is evidence from BUSSEY AND BANDURA 1984 that an individual IDENTIFIES better with same-sex role models

What is IDENTIFICATION?
The process whereby an individual associates with the qualities, characterises and views of another person. EG: Popularity, looks, sex, respect and admiration

What is IMITATION?
Where an individual consciously get reproduced or copies a behaviour. Need to have SELF EFFICACY - belief to do it, and be motivated from REINFORCEMENT

What is REINFORCEMENT?
Positive consequences which have strengthen a behaviour they have observed. Negative punishment is used to get rid of a behaviour

What happens when a behaviour is continually reinforced?
It becomes INTERNALISED, as its well rehearsed and becomes part of their personality
